This two day course aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of dementia and person-centred care, covering its various aspects from symptoms and diagnosis to care strategies and treatments.

This two-day course aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of dementia and person centred care, covering its various aspects from symptoms and diagnosis to care strategies and treatments. Through a mix of presentations, interactive sessions, and discussions, participants will gain insights into the complexities of dementia and practical strategies for support and management.

Day 1:
Introduction to dementia. Definition, types of dementia (Alzheimer’s disease, Vascular dementia, FTD, DLB etc). Early signs, symptoms and progression of dementia. Understanding delirium.
Overview of the brain: an interactive session on understanding the brain structure and the key areas of the brain involved in dementia.
Causes and risk factors. Exploration of the factors contributing to dementia, lifestyle factors and preventable risk factors.
Diagnosis and assessment. Overview of the diagnostic process for dementia. Various assessment tools used for diagnosing dementia. Importance of early diagnosis and its benefits.
Day 2:
Biospsychosocial understandings of dementia including person-centred care.
Living well with dementia and how to support people to utilise their strengths.
Treatment approaches. Medications and psychosocial interventions for cognition and quality of life.
Care strategies and interventions. Person-centred care approaches for individuals with dementia, behaviour, behaviours that challenge and strategies to manage these.
Strategies for carers and caregiver stress. Importance of caregiver support and self care.
Putting it together. How you and your service can put into practice what you have learned; identifying and problem solving barriers, planning and implementation going forward.
As with all our courses, we use a combination of lectures, demonstrations, group discussion and role play to teach the material

This course is suitable for anyone working in dementia care including mental health workers, support workers, nurses, care workers and individuals interested in gaining insights into understanding dementia. This is suitable for people working in care homes, the voluntary sector, NHS settings including community and hospital. This training can serve as a refresher course for those who have previous experience in this area.
Note: This course provides foundational knowledge and skills for working with individuals but does not qualify participants to practice as therapists or provide diagnosis or treatment for dementia. Consultation with a qualified mental health professional is essential for any clinical practice involving diagnosis or treatment.
