Over three days, this intensive course delves into the multifaceted landscape of suicide and self harm risk assessment, formulation and management. This course adheres to the NICE guidance on assessment, management and preventing recurrence.

By the end of this course delegates will have developed competencies in identifying and evaluating suicide and self harm risk factors, encompassing both individual and environmental contributors.
The course aims to equip participants with a comprehensive understanding of evidence-based assessment methodologies, empowering them to conduct thorough suicide risk assessments.
Traditional risk prediction measures have been shown repeatedly in research to be ineffective. This course uses a person-centred approach using therapeutic risk assessment, formulation and management.
This course adheres to the NICE guidance on assessment, management and preventing recurrence. It uses an evidence based approach and incorporates guidance from the Chief Coroner. Delegates will be able to formulate personalised safety plans and strategies tailored individual needs, emphasising ethical considerations, effective communication, and collaborative care approaches.
Delegates will have an understanding of ethical and legal considerations in suicide risk assessment, formulation and management, emphasising confidentiality, mandatory reporting, and the importance of self-care and professional resilience in dealing with clients who are experiencing suicidal ideation.

Day 1: Risk Assessment
Understanding suicide and risk factors.
Exploring risk factors: mental health disorders, substance abuse, trauma history, societal influences, and protective factors.
Suicide and self harm risk assessment .
Understanding and implementing NICE guidance and learning from the Chief Coroner. Focusing on needs and moving away from prediction to prevention.
Overview and practical application of assessment for evaluating suicide risk.
Effective interviewing skills for suicide risk assessment.
Ethical considerations and cultural sensitivity in conducting risk assessments.
Day 2: Risk Formuation
Suicide risk formulation and documentation.
Legal and ethical considerations in documentation, including confidentiality and mandatory reporting.
Strategies for managing professional stress, burnout prevention, and seeking support.
Day 3: Risk Managment
Crisis intervention strategies.
Collaborative safety planning: Best practice and developing a tailored approach for all.
Collaborative care approaches within multidisciplinary teams.
Putting it together: how you and your service can put into practice what you have learned; identifying and problem solving barriers, planning and implementation going forward.
The course is taught using a combination of lectures, interactive discussions, case studies, role-playing exercises and demonstrations.
