This 3-day course aims to provide a comprehensive overview of various psychosocial interventions in dementia care and equip participants with practical skills and strategies.

  • This three-day course aims to provide a comprehensive overview of various psychosocial interventions in dementia care and equip participants with practical skills and strategies. Through a mix of presentations, interactive sessions, and discussions, participants will gain insights into some of the key approaches in dementia and tools to enhance wellbeing, cognition and quality of life.

  • Day 1:

    Introduction to dementia. Definition and types, understanding the impact of dementia on individuals and caregivers, prevalence rates.

    Person centred care and personhood.

    Psychosocial interventions overview. Benefits and limitations of non-pharmacological approaches and overview of psychosocial interventions.

    Working with groups and individuals: practical tips.

    Psychosocial interventions Part 1: Introduction and overview of the following interventions: Creative Arts Therapies, Music Therapy, Cognitive Stimulation Therapy (CST).

    Day 2:

    Psychosocial interventions Part 2: Introduction and overview of the following interventions: Cognitive Rehabilitation, Animal Assisted Therapy, Doll Therapy, Horticulture Therapy, Life Story and Reminiscence Therapy, Physical Exercise and Movement, Multisensory Stimulation.

    Day 3:

    Strategies for distress and behaviours that challenge. Understanding key models of unmet need including Kitwood and Cohen Mansfield.

    Environmental modifications. Creating a calming therapeutic environment.

    Family and caregiver support, including introduction to interventions for families.

    Putting it Together: how you and your service can put into practice what you have learned; identifying and problem solving barriers, planning and implementation going forward.

    As with all our courses, we use a combination of lectures, demonstrations, group discussion and role play to teach the material

  • This course is suitable for anyone working in dementia care including mental health workers, support workers, nurses, care workers and individuals interested in gaining insights into understanding dementia. This is suitable for people working in care homes, the voluntary sector, NHS settings including community and inpatient . This training can serve as a refresher course for those who have previous experience in this area.

    Note: This course provides foundational knowledge and skills for working with individuals but does not qualify participants to practice as therapists or provide diagnosis or treatment for dementia. Consultation with a qualified mental health professional is essential for any clinical practice involving assessment, formulation, diagnosis or treatment. For further training, a one day training course on Cognitive Stimulation Therapy is available via UCL

  • This course is available as an in-house training course, both online and face to face.

  • Online, in-house: £3450 plus VAT (max 15 participants; extra participants are charged at £65 per person per day)

    Face to face, in-house: £4750 plus VAT (max 15 participants; extra participants are charged at £85 per person per day)
