The course will cover its historical development, the theoretical context and practical applications.

The three-day Motivational Interviewing (MI) course is designed to provide a comprehensive understanding to health professionals in Motivational Interviewing, covering its historical development, the theoretical context and practical applications. Motivational interviewing was developed and refined by William Miller and Stephen Rolllnick. The challenge of helping people to address their lifestyle choices is a global health concern. MI has been widely implemented to help people change their behaviour, and has a strong evidence base.

Day 1:
Introduction to Motivational Interviewing
Overview of MI. History, principles, and core components.
Spirit of MI. Exploring the guiding principles of MI: partnership, evocation, acceptance and compassion. Establishing rapport, developing empathy and enhasing motivation.
Core skills: OARS (Open questions, Affirmation, Reflections, Summarising). Focusing skills and identifying and prioritising goals for change.
Day 2:
Stages of Change and Practicing MI Techniques
Overview of the stages of change model (Prochaska and DiClemente): Precontemplation, Contemplation, Preparation, Action, Maintenance and Termination.
Identifying stages of change, understanding the relationship between MI and stages of change and applying MI in different stages.
Change talk and sustain talk. Recognising language cues that signal readiness for change. Strategies to evoke motivation and commitment to change.
Case studies and group discussions on integrating MI into clinical practice
Day 3:
Integration and Applications
Integrating MI into pracitice. MI in various settings - healthcare, counselling, coaching and more.
Supervision and feedback. Strategies for ongoing skill development and feedback loops.
Ethical considerations. Privacy, confidentiality and respecting autonomy.
Putting it together: how you and your service can put into practice what you have learned; identifying and problem solving barriers, planning and implementation going forward.
As with all our courses, there will be interactive discussions, case studies, demonstrations and opportunities for participants to practice and receive feedback on their application of MI techniques.

This course is suitable for any health professional interesting in learning this evidence based approach to behaviour change. This includes counsellors, nurses, GPs and other physicians, psychotherapists, occupational therapists and support workers.
Note: This course provides foundational knowledge and skills for working with individuals but does not qualify participants to practice as MI therapists. Consultation with a qualified professional is essential for any clinical practice involving assessment, formulation, diagnosis or treatment.
