Foundations in ACT
Over three days, delegates will immerse themselves in the principles and techniques of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), learning to apply mindfulness, acceptance, and value-driven behavioural change strategies to help clients develop psychological flexibility and live a more fulfilling life.

By the end of this course participants will have a solid understanding of the fundamental principles and core concepts of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), enabling them to apply key therapeutic strategies effectively to foster psychological flexibility in their clients. The course seeks to empower delegates to utilise ACT principles in creating personalised treatment plans and interventions tailored to diverse client populations.

Day 1
Overview of ACT principles, history, and theoretical framework
Understanding the six core processes of ACT: Cognitive defusion, experiential acceptance, present moment awareness, self-as-context, values, and committed action
Introduction to experiential acceptance and present moment awareness
Cultivating acceptance and mindfulness skills
Day 2:
Values and committed action
Techniques for helping clients identify and clarify personal values
Translating values into committed action and behaviour change
Developing action plans based on identified values
Cognitive defusion and self-as-context
Understanding cognitive defusion techniques to distance from unhelpful thoughts.
Day 3:
The choice point - formulating with ACT
Exploring the concept of psychological flexibility and its role in well-being
Ethical considerations when using ACT in therapy
Incorporating ACT techniques into existing therapeutic approaches
Tailoring ACT interventions for diverse client populations
Putting it together: how you and your service can put into practice what you have learned; identifying and problem solving barriers, planning and implementation going forward.

This course is suitable for mental health professionals (with or without a core training), including counsellors, psychotherapists, clinical psychologists and individuals interested in gaining insights into ACT.
Note: This course provides foundational knowledge and skills for working with individuals but does not qualify participants to practice as CBT therapists. Consultation with a qualified mental health professional is essential for any clinical practice involving assessment, formulation, diagnosis or treatment.
