Working with Families and Systems of People with Dementia


This three-day intensive workshop is designed to equip participants with knowledge and practical skills in interventions for families, carers and the wider system of people with dementia. Through a combination of lectures, case studies, demonstrations and interactive exercises, participants will gain expertise in equipping families and carers with practical skills, knowledge, and strategies derived from psychosocial interventions

  • This three-day intensive workshop is designed to equip participants with knowledge and practical skills in interventions for families, carers and the wider system of people with dementia. Through a combination of lectures, case studies, demonstrations and interactive exercises, participants will gain expertise in equipping families and carers with practical skills, knowledge, and strategies derived from psychosocial interventions. It focuses on fostering meaningful relationships, managing behaviors, engaging individuals with dementia, and creating comprehensive care plans tailored to their unique needs.

  • Day One

    Introduction to dementia and the impact on a person’s brain and behaviour changes.

    Understanding the psychological, emotional and social impact of dementia on individuals, families and carers.

    Overview of the evidence base on interventions for families and carers of people with dementia.

    Stress management techniques and coping strategies for families and carers.

    Communication strategies. Techniques for interacting with people with dementia, importance of non-verbal behaviour, active listening and validation therapy.

    Day Two

    Understanding and managing distress and behaviours that challenge in dementia and helping carers understand unmet needs and person centred care models.

    Strategies for de-escalation and prevention. Including creating a calming environment at home and reducing triggers.

    Cognitive stimulation and engagement. Importance of cognitive stimulation and meaningful engagement for individuals with dementia.

    Activities and interventions for carers to promote cognitive function and quality of life for people with dementia.

    Support Groups. Benefits of support groups for families and carers, suggested structure for carers group.

    Day Three

    Care planning and individualised approaches that promote dignity and respect. Individualised care plans, collaborative approach with family members, personalised strategies to address specific behaviours.

    Family dynamics and care coordination. Addressing family dynamics and roles in caregiving. Strategies for effective care coordination and communication among multiple caregivers.

    Ethical considerations. Mental capacity, maintaining dignity and autonomy.

    Evaluating the effectiveness of interventions.

    Putting it together: how you and your service can put into practice what you have learned; identifying and problem solving barriers, planning and implementation going forward.

    As with all our courses, we use a combination of lectures, demonstrations, group discussion and role play to teach the material

  • This course is suitable for health and social care workers who work with families and carers of people with dementia. It may be of interest to support workers, Occupational Therapists, Nurses, care workers and other staff, either in care homes, the community, or in hospital.

    Note: This course provides foundational knowledge and skills for working with individuals but does not qualify participants to practice as therapists. Consultation with a qualified mental health professional is essential for any clinical practice involving assessment, formulation, diagnosis or treatment.
