CBT for Older People
This three day Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) course aims to equip participants with a framework for working with older people using a CBT. There is strong evidence to support the use of CBT with older people. This course will provide participants with an understanding of age changes and when to adapt CBT with older people.

This three-day course aims to equip delegates with a comprehensive understanding of CBT with older people. Delegates will develop skills in understanding CBT and its applicability to working with older people. The course will then focus on tailoring interventions for older people and common challenges. The course will also provide advanced applications such as working with grief, loss, cognitive and physical impairments.

Day 1:
Introduction to Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. What is CBT, the historical context of CBT, and the evidence base for CBT with older people.
Core principles of CBT. The cognitive model, the behavioural model, and the principles of collaborative empiricism and Socratic questioning.
Common challenges in working with older people. Cohort beliefs, physical and cognitive impairments. Laidlaw’s Comprehensive Cognitive Formulation.
Assessment and case formulation. An overview of the key principles of assessment and case formulation in CBT with older people.
Day 2:
Adapting CBT for older people: what are the key differences?
Treatment planning and goal setting. Strategies for developing a treatment plan and setting goals, including the use of outcome measures and the importance of involving the client in the treatment planning process.
Behavioural techniques. An overview of behavioural techniques, including exposure therapy and values based behavioural activation.
Homework and between-session exercises. Strategies for engaging older people in homework and between-session exercises, including the use of activity scheduling.
Day 3:
Cognitive techniques. An overview of cognitive restructuring techniques, including identifying and challenging negative thoughts, generating alternative thoughts, and testing beliefs.
Coping with grief, loss and loneliness.
Working with cognitive and physical impairments.
Maintaining progress and preventing relapse. Strategies for terminating therapy and preventing relapse, including reviewing progress, consolidating gains, and developing a relapse prevention plan.
Putting it together: how you and your service can put into practice what you have learned; identifying and problem solving barriers, planning and implementation going forward.

This course is suitable for mental health professionals (with or without a core training), counsellors, support workers, psychotherapists, and individuals interested in gaining insights into CBT. with Older People. This training can serve as a refresher course for those who have previous experience in this area. No previous knowledge of CBT is necessary to attend this training.
Note: This course provides foundational knowledge and skills for working with individuals but does not qualify participants to practice as CBT therapists. Consultation with a qualified mental health professional is essential for any clinical practice involving assessment, diagnosis, formulation and treatment.
