Day 1: Understanding Depression and Introduction to CBT
Introduction to depression, definitions and prevalence. Factors contributing to depression.
Assessment of depression, self report measures, assessing and managing risk including suicidal ideation.
Overview of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). Explanation of CBT principles and evidence base of CBT for depression. Understanding the cognitive model and behavioural model. How thoughts, emotions, physical sensations and behaviours are interconnected.
Formulations for depression, including Beck et al (1979)
Day 2: Behavioural Interventions and Values, Cognitive Interventions Part 1.
Behavioural interventions: behavioural activation, activity scheduling and reinforcement. Addressing sleep problems.
Values based behavioural activation. Addressing depression through structured activity scheduling and reinforcement.
Cognitive interventions. Cognitive restructuring, identifying and challenging negative automatic thoughts. Using thought records. Identifying unhelpful thinking styles (all or nothing thinking, catastrophising).
Day 3: Cognitive Interventions Part 2 and Advanced Techniques.
Mindfulness and relaxation techniques. Introduction to mindfulness practices for depression. Breathing exercises, guided imagery and progressive muscular relaxation.
Addressing core beliefs. Identifying and challenging core beliefs and techniques for modifying unhelpful core beliefs.
Relapse prevention and maintenance. Strategies for preventing relapse and maintaining progress. Creating a personal relapse prevention plan. Reviewing progress and setting future goals.
Putting it together: how you and your service can put into practice what you have learned; identifying and problem solving barriers, planning and implementation going forward.
Throughout the course, participants will engage in experiential exercises, role-plays, and case discussions to gain hands-on experience in applying cognitive and behavioural interventions with people with depression. They will leave with practical skills to integrate CBT for depression seamlessly into their practice, leading to more effective and client-centred treatment outcomes

This course is suitable for mental health professionals (with or without a core training), counsellors, psychotherapists, and individuals interested in gaining insights into CBT.
Note: This course provides foundational knowledge and skills for working with individuals but does not qualify participants to practice as therapists. Consultation with a qualified mental health professional is essential for any clinical practice involving treatment.
