CBT for Children and Young People


In this three-day course on CBT for children and young people, participants will acquire skills in applying age-appropriate CBT techniques tailored to the developmental needs of younger populations.

  • This comprehensive three-day course aims to provide participants with a solid foundation in understanding the principles, techniques, and practical applications of CBT tailored specifically for children and young people, emphasising interactive learning, case-based discussions, and hands-on practice.

  • Day 1

    Overview of CBT principles and its adaptation for younger populations

    Understanding developmental considerations in CBT practice for children and adolescents

    Techniques for establishing rapport and building trust with young clients

    Strategies for age-appropriate communication and active participation in therapy sessions

    Tools and methods for conducting comprehensive assessments in children and adolescents

    Introduction to formulation

    Day 2

    Treatment planning and goal setting

    Developing individualised treatment plans and setting achievable goals for children and adolescents in CBT

    Addressing anxiety in children and adolescents using CBT including introduction of key CBT techniques aparted for a younger population

    Addressing depression in children and adolescents using CBT including introduction of key CBT techniques adapted for a younger population

    Practical demonstrations and interactive exercises illustrating techniques

    Case discussions and strategies for tailoring interventions based on specific issues

    Understanding ethical guidelines and considerations when working with children and adolescents in CBT

    Day 3

    Formulation Part 2: developing a longitudinal formulation

    Group exercises and case formulation practice

    Get creative: how to use drawing, drama and toys in your CBT practice

    Strategies for involving parents/caregivers in the therapeutic process

    Putting it Together: how you and your service can put into practice what you have learned; identifying and problem solving barriers, planning and implementation going forward.

  • This course is suitable for mental health professionals (with or without a core training), including counsellors, psychotherapists, clinical psychologists and individuals interested in gaining insights into CBT for children and young people.

    Note: This course provides foundational knowledge and skills for working with individuals but does not qualify participants to practice as CBT therapists. Consultation with a qualified mental health professional is essential for any clinical practice involving assessment, formulation, diagnosis or treatment.
