  • The three-day foundation course in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) aims to equip participants with a comprehensive understanding of CBT principles, including the cognitive and behavioural aspects, while imparting practical skills through interactive sessions, role-plays, and case studies, fostering competence in applying CBT techniques in diverse therapeutic settings. By exploring the basics of CBT, participants will gain the necessary knowledge and tools to identify and challenge thinking, modify behaviours, and integrate these fundamental concepts into their professional practice effectively.

  • Day 1

    Overview of CBT principles and history

    Core concepts: thoughts, emotions, physical sensations and behaviours. Beck CBT model and theory

    Understanding the Hot Cross Model

    The importance of structure in CBT

    In-between session Tasks

    The Behavioural Model (Jacobson)

    Behaviourism and its integration into CBT

    Understanding the concept of values-based behavioural activation

    Developing activity scheduling and planning

    Practical exercises to promote values-based behavioural activation

    Day 2

    Introduction to Exposure Therapy and Exposure and Response Prevention in CBT

    Practical exercises (role play and demonstrations) on working with exposure.

    The Cognitive Model (Beck, Clark and key others)

    Identifying automatic thoughts and cognitive distortions

    Case studies and examples demonstrating cognitive distortions

    Cognitive restructuring techniques

    - Identifying and challenging negative automatic thoughts using;

    - evidence for and against

    - continuums to challenge all or nothing thinking

    - responsibility pie charts

    - behavioural experiments

    - surveys

    Integrating cognitive and behavioural interventions

    Day 3

    The longitudinal formulation in CBT

    Working with core beliefs

    Ending therapy and relapse prevention planning

    Addressing cultural considerations in CBT practice

    Ethical considerations and limitations in CBT practice

    Role-playing exercises for practical skill application

    Putting it Together: how you and your service can put into practice what you have learned; identifying and problem solving barriers, planning and implementation going forward.

  • This course is suitable for mental health professionals (with or without a core training), including counsellors, psychotherapists, clinical psychologists and individuals interested in gaining insights into CBT.

    Note: This course provides foundational knowledge and skills for working with individuals but does not qualify participants to practice as CBT therapists. Consultation with a qualified mental health professional is essential for any clinical practice involving assessment, formulation, diagnosis or treatment.
