This comprehensive course on assessment and formulation integrates Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) principles with the 5 Ps framework, providing participants with a holistic approach to assessment and case conceptualisation.

  • This comprehensive course on assessment and formulation integrates Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) principles with the 5 Ps framework, providing participants with a holistic approach to assessment and case conceptualisation. Over the duration of the course, attendees will master the art of identifying presenting problems, predisposing, precipitating, perpetuating and protective factors, and learn how to effectively apply CBT techniques in crafting tailored and effective treatment plans.

  • Day 1: Good Practice in Assessment

    Principles of assessment. Understanding the biopsychosocial model of assessment. Ethical considerations and confidentiality. Establishing rapport and building trust.

    Tools and techniques for assessment. Interview techniques (structured, semi-structured). Use of standardised measures (e.g. PHQ9, GAD7).

    Risk assessment and safety planning. Suicide and self harm risk assessment and management. Assessing for other risks, safeguarding and capacity.

    Assessment structure and framework, documentation and report writing.

    Day 2: Understanding Formulation Fundamentals

    Introduction to CBT formulation. Overview of CBT and its key principles. Understanding the importance of CBT formulation in treatment planning. Discussion on the role of CBT formulation in guiding interventions.

    Exploring the 5 Ps model.

    Core components: Exploring the Beck model: Early experiences, core beliefs, assumptions, thoughts, emotions, physical sensations and behaviours. Maintenance cycles and hot cross bun. Exploring disorder specific CBT and transdiagnostic models

    Day 3: Practical Techniques in CBT Formulation

    Tailoring formulations. Adapting formulation to various populations and specific client needs. Understanding cultural considerations in formulation. Practical strategies for effective communication and collaboration with clients in the formulation process.

    Using formulation for treatment planning and progress monitoring. Linking CBT formulation to treatment planning and goal setting. Tracking progress and modifying formulations based on client advancements or challenges. The role of formulation in guiding therapy sessions.

    Putting it together: how you and your service can put into practice what you have learned; identifying and problem solving barriers, planning and implementation going forward.

    The course is taught using a combination of lectures, interactive discussions, case studies, role-playing exercises and demonstrations.

  • This course is suitable for mental health professionals (with or without a core training), counsellors, psychotherapists, and individuals interested in gaining insights into formulation within a CBT framework.

  • This course is available as an in-house training course, both online and face to face.
